An Introduction to Fitness & Music

Hey, and welcome to MotetMusic. My name is Frank Motet, and I love two things in life: fitness and music. Combining the two gives me a great deal of happiness. Today, I will talk about fitness, in general, exercise equipment I’ve used and my favorite workout tracks.

Ever since I was 18 I have heavily been into fitness, and especially working out at home. I’m a music producer who works at home by day, so working out at home during my lunch break or first thing in the morning is perfect, as I don’t have to waste time traveling to the gym an can get a bit more sleep!

I have used rowing machines, treadmills and exercise bikes, although I have a preference towards exercise bikes, because they tend to be quiet, and I can sit down when exercising!

A few things you should be on the lookout for, if you are thinking about buying an exercise bike, is whether you should go for an upright, recumbent or spin bike model. To put it a simply as possible, choose a recumbent bike for comfort (they have really comfortable reclined seats with lumbar support), a spin bike if you really are serious about getting into shape/and or you are a road cyclist, and an upright bike if you want something in between

A rowing machine is perfect if you want a total body workout; however, be warned, they are very tiring and can be quite loud/expensive. I personally prefer water based resistant models because they do a good job of simulating the feel of rowing on a lake, although this may just be because I used to go rowing when I was at college. Other options include magnetic resistance and air resistance rowers.

There’s only really one thing you need to know when it comes to making the right choice about treadmills, which is that the motor is the most important aspect. If you want to walk as a form of exercise and do not care about running, then lucky for you you can save a lot of money. The treadmill only needs to be powered by a 1.5-2-horsepower motor. If you are looking to run as your main form of exercise, then a treadmill that comes with a 3.0-horsepower motor or greater is compulsory.

Favourite Workout Tracks

As I’m a music producer for rock and indie bands, I clearly have a strong preference for this type of music. Pretty much anything with a guitar goes. None of that dance or drum n bass etc. music for me.

Personally, I love listening to classic rock when I work out. So that means bands like AC/DC and The Rolling Stones. Let me tell you that nothing quite gets me pumped up like Gimme Shelter, Sympathy for the Devil or Highway to Hell. Some indie bands also make the cut, especially the song called Mr. November by The National, and anything by The Libertines.
